The city benefits substantially from the BMW manufacturing facility in nearby Greer — the company's only full manufacturing plant in the United States, and its largest worldwide by volume.

Healthcare dominates local employment, led by Spartanburg Regional (9,648 positions), alongside county government, the school district, Wofford College, and Denny's corporate headquarters. Like Greenville, Spartanburg's economy historically centred on textile manufacturing before diversifying into healthcare, education, and corporate services.

Greenville does not appear as an entry in the Top 400 Regional Markets — North America list.
