Zagreb recorded 767,131 municipal residents at the 2021 census, on the Sava River at the southern slopes of Medvednica mountain. The city's recorded history dates to 1094, when two separate settlements — the clergy centre of Kaptol and the merchant hub of Gradec — were later unified under a single administration. Zagreb now functions as Croatia's primary transport hub and hosts nearly all of the country's major companies, government ministries, and research institutions.
