The city benefits substantially from the BMW manufacturing facility in nearby Greer — the company's only full manufacturing plant in North America. That plant employed roughly 8,800 people as of February 2017. Healthcare dominates local employment, led by Spartanburg Regional (9,648 positions), alongside county government, the school district, Wofford College, and Denny's corporate headquarters. Like Greenville, Spartanburg's economy historically centred on textile manufacturing before diversifying into healthcare, education, and corporate services.

Greenville does not appear as a ranked entry in the Top 400 Regional Markets — North America list. This is not a data defect: in the current build, "Greenville SC" is the metro-core reference point for two other suburban entries (Spartanburg, rank 45, score 9.0; Asheville, rank 104, score 7.5).
