Greenville–Spartanburg Regional Market

Greenville does not carry its own entry in the North American Top-400 Regional Markets list. In the current dataset, "Greenville SC" functions as the metro-core reference point. Two other markets — Spartanburg, SC and Asheville, NC — are counted as suburbs of Greenville, rather than Greenville being counted as a suburban market itself.

Overview

According to Wikipedia (accessed 2026-07-10), Greenville's city proper had 70,720 residents at the 2020 census across 30.02 square miles (metropolitan area approximately 1 million). It serves as the anchor city of Upstate South Carolina, positioned roughly midway between Charlotte and Atlanta. Historically "The Textile Capital of the World," Greenville has transitioned toward advanced manufacturing and automotive production. Major employers include Michelin's North American headquarters, Prisma Health, Duke Energy, and Bon Secours. Downtown revitalization since the 1980s and 1990s includes the Peace Center (1990), Falls Park on the Reedy (2004), and the Liberty Bridge pedestrian suspension structure (2004).

Spartanburg, roughly 30 miles northeast of Greenville, had 38,732 residents at the 2020 census across 20.37 square miles, positioned approximately 80 miles west of Charlotte. The city benefits substantially from the BMW manufacturing facility in nearby Greer — the company's only full manufacturing plant in North America. That plant employed roughly 8,800 people as of February 2017.

Correction (2026-08-02): this has been untrue since 2019, when BMW opened a manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The Greer plant remains BMW's only full manufacturing plant in the United States, and its largest plant worldwide by volume — but not its only one in North America. Flagged, not resolved. Healthcare dominates local employment, led by Spartanburg Regional (9,648 positions), alongside county government, the school district, Wofford College, and Denny's corporate headquarters. Like Greenville, Spartanburg's economy historically centred on textile manufacturing before diversifying into healthcare, education, and corporate services.

Regional Market Standing

Greenville does not appear as an entry in the Top 400 Regional Markets — North America list. This is not a data defect: in the current build, "Greenville SC" is the metro-core reference point for two other suburban entries (Spartanburg and Asheville). This is consistent with the co-location screening system's own taxonomy, which excludes metro cores from the suburban-regional screening band.
