As of December 2017, approximately 40.6 percent of residents had a foreign background, with the largest non-Nordic communities from Iraq, Iran, and Syria, alongside Finnish and Polish populations. A metro expansion to Barkarby station and the developing Barkarbystaden district is scheduled for completion in 2027, adding to the municipality's three existing commuter rail stations and integrated bus network.
