Overview

Osijek recorded 96,313 residents at the 2021 census, on the southern bank of the Drava River. The city's origins trace to Roman times as Mursa, an important military centre in the province of Pannonia; it was first recorded under its current name in 1196. Osijek suffered extensive damage during the 1990s Croatian War of Independence but has since been reconstructed, and now functions as a cultural and economic hub built around Baroque landmarks including the 18th-century Tvrđa citadel.
