Inverness Regional Market
Inverness, the northernmost city in the United Kingdom, does not currently appear in the European Top-400 Regional Markets list. Its distance from Edinburgh and Glasgow, the nearest major metros, leaves it serving the Highlands as its own regional centre applied for qualification.
Overview
According to Wikipedia (accessed 2026-07-10), Inverness had 47,790 residents in 2020 (Greater Inverness 65,210 in 2021) across 24.3 square kilometres. It sits at the mouth of the River Ness in the Scottish Highlands and connects to Edinburgh and Glasgow via the A9 and A82 trunk roads. Between 1998 and 2008, the city and the wider central Highlands recorded the largest growth in average economic productivity per person in Scotland. Traditional industries such as distilling have largely given way to technology and medical sectors, including diabetes-diagnostic manufacturing by LifeScan. Major employers include Scottish Natural Heritage (relocated from Edinburgh), Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and Raigmore Hospital. The Inverness Campus, a flagship development combining academic buildings, business incubation units, sports facilities, and residential space, is projected to contribute over £50 million to the economy and attract roughly 3,000 additional students. Inverness was rated the happiest place to live in the United Kingdom in 2024.
Regional Market Standing
Inverness does not currently appear in the [[atlas-top-400-europe|Top 400 Regional Markets — Europe]] list. This is not a data defect; the market is not among those published under the confirmed 2026-08-07 dataset. Inverness serves the Highlands as its own regional centre, and the co-location qualification system selects on anchor composition rather than on distance from Edinburgh or Glasgow.
