According to Wikipedia (accessed 2026-07-10), Chester's built-up area had 92,760 residents at the 2021 census (138,875 for the official city area including charter trustee wards). It is situated approximately 30 to 40 miles northwest of Liverpool via the M53 motorway.

Correction (2026-08-02): Chester–Liverpool is roughly 17–19 miles via the M53, not 30–40 miles — the article's own km conversion (48–64 km) compounds rather than catches the error. The underlying argument (Chester falls within the 15–80 km suburban-regional band) still holds once corrected. Flagged, not resolved. The service sector dominates the economy — tourism, retail, public administration, and financial services — with employers including Bank of America, NFU Mutual, Lloyds Bank, Virgin Money, and Quilter, alongside the University of Chester and Countess of Chester Hospital. The nearby Airbus UK factory in Broughton employs approximately 6,000. Chester markets itself as an "International Heritage City," anchored by the unique two-tier medieval Chester Rows galleried shops, the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, and the Forum indoor centre, with the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet and Broughton Retail Park nearby. The administrative unit "Cheshire West and Chester" does appear in the ranked table (rank 32, suburb of Wigan, score 7.5), but that entry covers a different administrative boundary than the city of Chester itself. This article does not assert they are the same market without further verification.
