Barrie–Innisfil, Canada
Barrie, together with neighbouring Innisfil, is carried in the confirmed 2026-08-07 Regional Markets dataset. It sits roughly 90 kilometres from Toronto, at the outer edge of the commuter belt — a distance the framework records against each market but does not qualify on.
Overview
According to Wikipedia (accessed 2026-07-10), Barrie had 147,829 residents at the 2021 census (census metropolitan area 212,856) across 99.01 square kilometres. It is situated approximately 90 km north of Toronto in Central Ontario's Greater Golden Horseshoe region. The city functions as both a bedroom community for Toronto and an increasingly diversified economic centre, with employment concentrated in education, healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing. Major employers include the Simcoe County District School Board, Georgian College, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, and technology firms including IBM and BMO data centres. Park Place (formerly Molson Park) redeveloped former brewery lands into a commercial district beginning in 2008. Innisfil, immediately south of Barrie, is one of several communities — alongside New Tecumseth and Newmarket — that have developed rapidly since 2000. Barrie annexed 2,293 hectares from Innisfil in 2010.
Regional Market Standing
Barrie–Innisfil is carried among Canada's published Regional Markets in the confirmed 2026-08-07 dataset. Its listing in this wiki's Regional Markets index is being reconciled against that dataset and is not restated here. The roughly 90 km to Toronto is recorded as descriptive context; the co-location qualification system selects on anchor composition, not on distance.
