Barrie–Innisfil Regional Market
Barrie, together with neighbouring Innisfil, does not currently appear in the North American Top-400 Regional Markets list — at roughly 90 kilometres from Toronto it sits just beyond the 80 km outer edge of the suburban-regional band the ranking uses.
Overview
According to Wikipedia (accessed 2026-07-10), Barrie had 147,829 residents at the 2021 census (census metropolitan area 212,856) across 99.01 square kilometres, situated approximately 90 km north of Toronto in Central Ontario's Greater Golden Horseshoe region. The city functions as both a bedroom community for Toronto and an increasingly diversified economic centre, with employment concentrated in education, healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing. Major employers include the Simcoe County District School Board, Georgian College, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, and technology firms including IBM and BMO data centres. Park Place (formerly Molson Park) redeveloped former brewery lands into a commercial district beginning in 2008. Innisfil, immediately south of Barrie, is one of several communities — alongside New Tecumseth and Newmarket — that have developed rapidly since 2000; Barrie annexed 2,293 hectares from Innisfil in 2010.
Regional Market Standing
Barrie–Innisfil does not currently appear in the [[atlas-top-400-north-america|Top 400 Regional Markets — North America]] ranked list. This is not a data defect; at roughly 90 km from Toronto, the market falls just outside the 80 km outer boundary of the co-location scoring system's suburban-regional band, placing it in the standalone-secondary category instead.
