Moncton Regional Market
Moncton, the commercial hub of the Maritime Provinces, does not currently appear in the North American Top-400 Regional Markets list. The region lacks a single dominant major-metro core against which the qualification system's suburban-regional distance band would apply.
Overview
According to Wikipedia (accessed 2026-07-10), Moncton's city proper had 79,470 residents at the 2021 census (metropolitan area 157,717) across 140.67 square kilometres. It is situated in southeastern New Brunswick at the geographic centre of the Maritime Provinces along the Petitcodiac River. The economy is stable and diversified, built on transportation, distribution, retailing, and commercial heritage, and supplemented by education, healthcare, finance, IT, and insurance. Moncton benefits from a bilingual workforce and the largest catchment area in Atlantic Canada — 1.6 million people within a three-hour drive. More than 37 call centres employ over 5,000 people. Corporate headquarters include Assumption Life, Atlantic Lottery Corporation, and Medavie Blue Cross, alongside Irving Group operations and a Molson Coors brewery. Recent commercial development includes the Avenir Centre arena (2018) and retail centres such as Champlain Place and Wheeler Park Power Centre.
Regional Market Standing
Moncton does not currently appear in the [[atlas-top-400-north-america|Top 400 Regional Markets — North America]] list. This is not a data defect; Maritime Canada does not have a single dominant major-metro core against which the co-location qualification system's 15–80 km suburban-regional distance filter would apply. Moncton functions as its own regional commercial centre rather than a suburb of a larger metro.
