Italy — Regional Market index
Pending rebuild (2026-09-06). The market table and counts on this page still reflect the pre-rebuild selection. Under the confirmed 2026-08-07 dataset, now live on Top 400 Regional Markets — Europe, Italy publishes 62 Regional Markets. Rebuilding this country table is a separate, scoped task — the discrepancy is flagged here, not resolved.
The Italy regional market index lists the 21 Italian entries in the Top 400 Regional Markets — Europe set. Each entry is a named suburb or satellite municipality between 15 and 80 kilometres of a major Italian metropolitan reference point that contains at least one retail co-location cluster, qualified under the co-location regional market framework. This page is a filtered, Italy-specific view of that continental table — not a separate dataset — so every entry and tier count below matches the continental table exactly and updates automatically if that table is corrected. No rank or score is published for any market.
Metropolitan groupings
Italy's 21 markets cluster most heavily around Milan (5 markets), reflecting the density of the Po Valley's suburban industrial and retail belt. Verona (3), Bologna (2), Rome (2), and Bari (2) form a second tier. The remaining markets are single entries reporting to Turin, Genoa, Venice, Messina, Naples, Florence, and Trieste — giving Italy the widest geographic spread relative to its market count of any of the seven country breakout pages on this list.
Tier composition
Asti (suburb of Turin) is Italy's only Tier 1 market carrying a civic anchor. Eighteen of Italy's 21 markets qualify on a single Tier 1 cluster with no civic anchor, the most common composition across the entire European set. Lucca and Como qualify on a Tier 2+Tier 3 combination.

Co-location anchor network
The Italy Co-location Index evaluates commercial nodes across the Italian peninsula using the Retail co-location methodology and the deterministic ranking system. Sites are evaluated where IKEA operates as the Primary Target anchor, against secondary operators (Leroy Merlin, Makro) and tertiary civic infrastructure within defined catchment radii. Italy is one of the four markets covered in the co-location tier system.
Anchor Network
IKEA operates approximately 22 stores in Italy. The largest concentrations are around Milan (Corsico, Carugate, Cinisello Balsamo), Rome (Porta di Roma), Turin (Collegno), Florence (Sesto Fiorentino), Genoa, Bologna, and Naples. Secondary anchors present in overlapping metropolitan markets: Leroy Merlin (~40 Italian locations) and Makro (~50 Metro Cash & Carry locations). Italy's 67 state universities and major hospital systems (Gemelli, Niguarda, Policlinico di Milano, Careggi, the Policlinico systems in Turin and Florence) provide tertiary infrastructure in the same metropolitan zones.
Typical convergence pattern
Italian District-tier nodes are concentrated in suburban commercial zones outside the five major metropolitan areas. The typical qualifying node pairs an IKEA store with a Leroy Merlin or Makro within the secondary catchment radius, with hospital access within the civic ring; a university campus is often present nearby but is not itself a gating condition. The clustering reflects Italy's commercial development pattern: large-format retail has concentrated on ring-road corridors around population centres, co-located with civic infrastructure that preceded the retail development.
District — institutional-grade nodes
A District-tier node pairs the IKEA primary anchor with a hardware or warehouse secondary — Leroy Merlin and Makro are the operators that most often satisfy this gate — top-quartile catchment population, and hospital access within the civic ring. These represent the most consistently validated commercial environments the Italy dataset currently identifies.
