Greece — Regional Market index

The Greece regional market index lists the seven Greek markets that meet the co-location system's composition gates under the current 2026-08-07 dataset — the smallest country entry among the fifteen European countries the framework's newest data build covers. The seven markets span the length of the Greek mainland and two islands, from Thrace in the northeast to Crete in the south, rather than clustering around a single metropolitan core.

Coverage

No rank or score is published for any market in this table. Every market below qualifies under the framework's Regional Market composition gate — a hypermarket anchor paired with at least two of {hardware, price club, lifestyle, electronics, sport} across the market's co-location clusters. Full methodology: Regional Markets Intelligence System.

The metropolitan reference point recorded for each market is the nearest major metropolitan centre in the framework's continental reference set — a straight-line (crow-flies) distance measurement, not a drive-time or commuting estimate. It is not a claim that the market functions as a commuter suburb of that centre. Two markets, Gerakas and Elefsina, genuinely sit within a short range of Athens. The remaining five reference points run from 103 to 220 kilometres away, including one cross-border reference (Plovdiv, Bulgaria, for Alexandroupolis) and one that crosses open water to the Greek mainland (Kanali, on Corfu, referenced against Patras).

Markets

This table is a country-specific view of the continental Top 400 Regional Markets — Europe set. No rank or score is published for any market.

Market Metropolitan reference km T1 T2 T3
Gerakas Athens 12.3 1 0 0
Elefsina Athens 17.9 1 0 0
Chania Heraklion 103.3 0 0 1
Kalamata Patras 138.4 0 0 1
Volos Thessaloniki 141.3 1 0 0
Alexandroupolis Plovdiv (Bulgaria) 171.9 0 1 1
Kanali Patras 219.8 1 0 0

Retail and Civic Anchors

Sklavenitis, a Greek hypermarket chain comparable to Walmart or Kroger, anchors all seven clusters — the only chain present in every entry. Praktiker (hardware) and Kotsovolos (electronics) each appear in five of the seven; IKEA (lifestyle) anchors the two markets with the smallest catchments, Chania and Kalamata. Civic infrastructure varies by market: the two Athens-area entries (Gerakas, Elefsina) draw on dense metropolitan hospital networks, while Chania, Kalamata, Volos, and Kanali each anchor around a named regional university.

AEC Data Coverage

Climate, seismic, and wildfire-hazard data has been computed for two of the seven clusters to date — Gerakas and Alexandroupolis. Both sit in a Csa (hot-summer Mediterranean) climate zone, with materially elevated seismic hazard (0.18–0.20g peak ground acceleration) and high-to-very-high wildfire exposure. Coverage for the remaining five clusters — Volos, Chania, Kalamata, Kanali, and Elefsina — is pending in the current dataset build; see GIS Data Overview for the AEC data pipeline.
