Italy — Regional Market index
The Italy regional market index lists the 62 Italian markets that meet the co-location system's composition gates. Italy is the largest country entry in the European set, drawn from a qualifying pool of 108. This page is a filtered, Italy-specific view of the continental table — not a separate dataset.
Coverage
No rank or score is published for any market in this table. Every market below qualifies under the framework's Regional Market composition gate — a hypermarket anchor paired with at least two of {hardware, price club, lifestyle, electronics, sport} across the market's co-location clusters. Full methodology: Regional Markets Intelligence System.
The metropolitan reference point recorded for each market is the nearest major metropolitan centre in the framework's continental reference set — a straight-line (crow-flies) distance measurement, not a drive-time or commuting estimate. It is not a claim that the market functions as a commuter suburb of that centre. Italy's 62 markets reference 17 distinct centres. Milan carries 10 entries, Florence and Bologna seven each, Turin five, and Ancona, Bari, Messina, Naples, and Venice four each. Two reference points sit outside Italy: Saint-Christophe, in the Aosta Valley, references Innsbruck, Austria, and Sassari, on Sardinia, references Toulon, France, 343 kilometres across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Italy's median reference distance is 63 kilometres, and 45 of its 62 markets sit within 80 kilometres of their reference point. The two longest — Cagliari at 389 kilometres and Sassari at 343 — are both Sardinian and reflect the framework's continental reference set rather than any commuting relationship.
Catchment population is recorded for all 62 Italian markets. Consumer-spend figures are recorded for 36 of the 62 and absent for the remaining 26 — a disclosed gap in the underlying source data, stated plainly rather than presented as zero.
Cluster composition
The 62 markets carry 96 co-location clusters between them — 57 Tier 1, two Tier 2, and 37 Tier 3. Fifty-one of the 62 carry at least one Tier 1 cluster. Ten qualify on Tier 3 clusters alone, the highest count of Tier 3-only markets of any country in the European set.

Co-location anchor network
The Italy Co-location Index evaluates commercial nodes across the Italian peninsula using the Retail co-location methodology and the deterministic ranking system. Sites are evaluated where IKEA operates as the Primary Target anchor, against secondary operators (Leroy Merlin, Makro) and tertiary civic infrastructure within defined catchment radii. Italy is one of the four markets covered in the co-location tier system.
Anchor Network
IKEA operates approximately 22 stores in Italy. The largest concentrations are around Milan (Corsico, Carugate, Cinisello Balsamo), Rome (Porta di Roma), Turin (Collegno), Florence (Sesto Fiorentino), Genoa, Bologna, and Naples. Secondary anchors present in overlapping metropolitan markets: Leroy Merlin (~40 Italian locations) and Makro (~50 Metro Cash & Carry locations). Italy's 67 state universities and major hospital systems (Gemelli, Niguarda, Policlinico di Milano, Careggi, the Policlinico systems in Turin and Florence) provide tertiary infrastructure in the same metropolitan zones.
Typical convergence pattern
Italian District-tier nodes are concentrated in suburban commercial zones outside the five major metropolitan areas. The typical qualifying node pairs an IKEA store with a Leroy Merlin or Makro within the secondary catchment radius, with hospital access within the civic ring; a university campus is often present nearby but is not itself a gating condition. The clustering reflects Italy's commercial development pattern: large-format retail has concentrated on ring-road corridors around population centres, co-located with civic infrastructure that preceded the retail development.
District — institutional-grade nodes
A District-tier node pairs the IKEA primary anchor with a hardware or warehouse secondary — Leroy Merlin and Makro are the operators that most often satisfy this gate — top-quartile catchment population, and hospital access within the civic ring. These represent the most consistently validated commercial environments the Italy dataset currently identifies.
