Canada — Regional Market index
Rebuilt (2026-09-06). This page was rebuilt against the confirmed 2026-08-07 dataset, the same build now live on Top 400 Regional Markets — North America. The prior version listed 23 Canadian entries from a superseded selection; the confirmed count is 56. Every market, reference point, distance, and cluster count below comes from that dataset.
The Canada regional market index lists the 56 markets in Canada that meet the co-location system's composition gates under the current 2026-08-07 dataset, drawn from a qualifying pool of 112. This page is a filtered, country-specific view of the continental table — not a separate dataset. No rank or score is published for any market.
Coverage
No rank or score is published for any market in this table. Every market below qualifies under the framework's Regional Market composition gate — a hypermarket anchor paired with at least two of {hardware, price club, lifestyle, electronics, sport} across the market's co-location clusters. Full methodology: Regional Markets Intelligence System.
The metropolitan reference point recorded for each market is the nearest major metropolitan centre in the framework's continental reference set — a straight-line (crow-flies) distance measurement, not a drive-time or commuting estimate. It is not a claim that the market functions as a commuter suburb of that centre. Canada's 56 markets reference 13 distinct centres — the narrowest reference set in the North American table. Vancouver and Toronto carry 12 entries each, Montreal seven, and Edmonton six. Three markets reference a centre in the United States: Belleville and Kingston, Ontario to Syracuse, New York, and Thunder Bay to Green Bay, Wisconsin. Canada's median reference distance is 90 kilometres, with 24 of its 56 markets within 80 kilometres of their reference point and 18 beyond 150. The longest is Timmins, Ontario at 549 kilometres from Ottawa, a consequence of how sparsely major centres are spaced across northern Canada.
Catchment population and consumer-spend figures are recorded for all 56 Canadian markets, with no gaps. They are descriptive context only and take no part in selection.
Cluster composition
The 56 markets carry 107 co-location clusters between them — 77 Tier 1, 13 Tier 2, and 17 Tier 3, an average of 1.91 clusters per market. That is above both the North American average of 1.77 and the European average of 1.36. Every Canadian market carries at least one Tier 1 cluster, and none qualifies on Tier 3 clusters alone.

Co-location anchor network
This index identifies high-value commercial nodes within the Canadian market, evaluated according to the Retail co-location methodology and operationalised by the deterministic ranking system. The list represents the Canadian subset of the co-location tier system.
Sites are evaluated based on the proximity of Secondary anchors (Costco, Home Depot) and Tertiary institutional infrastructure (Healthcare, Higher Education) to the Primary Target anchor (Walmart Supercentre).
Regional tier — illustrative convergence sites
The following municipalities illustrate Regional-tier composition: a Walmart Supercentre primary anchor paired with secondary and tertiary anchors within the required catchment radii. Tier assignment is dynamic; current status for any specific site is verified on the live GIS platform, not restated here.
