Architecture

Architecture is the art and technique of designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures. The word derives from the Latin architectura, itself from the Greek arkhitekton: arkhi (chief) and tekton (builder). Architecture encompasses not only the visual and aesthetic qualities of buildings but also their structural performance, spatial organization, environmental behaviour, and integration into the urban context in which they sit. It is simultaneously a practical discipline — concerned with shelter, enclosure, structural stability, and programmatic function — and a cultural one, in which buildings embody the values, technical capacities, and aesthetic sensibilities of the societies that produce them.

Foundational Theory: Vitruvius

The oldest surviving text in the Western architectural tradition is De architectura, written by the Roman engineer and architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio in the first century BCE and dedicated to the Emperor Augustus. Vitruvius articulated three qualities that every building should possess: firmitas (durability or structural soundness), utilitas (utility or programmatic fitness), and venustas (beauty or aesthetic delight). This triad has remained the foundational framework for architectural theory across two millennia, providing the terms within which debates about the relationship between function, structure, and beauty in building design have been conducted.

The Vitruvian triad was revived, translated, and debated by Renaissance theorists including Leon Battista Alberti (De re aedificatoria, 1452) and Andrea Palladio (I quattro libri dell'architettura, 1570). It remains present in contemporary architectural education as a summary of the discipline's core concerns.

Prehistoric and Ancient Architecture

The earliest known purpose-built structures predate written history. Göbekli Tepe in present-day southeastern Turkey, dated to the tenth millennium BCE, consists of large circular enclosures with elaborately carved T-shaped limestone pillars — a monumental constructed site from a period before settled agriculture. Its existence demonstrates that organized construction activity, including the mobilization of labour and technical skill at scale, preceded the Neolithic agricultural revolution.

Çatalhöyük in present-day central Turkey (occupied approximately 7500–5700 BCE) represents one of the earliest urban settlements, with a dense cellular building pattern in which mud-brick dwellings shared party walls and were accessed through roof openings rather than street-level doors. Jericho, in the Jordan Valley, is among the earliest sites with evidence of defensive architecture: a stone tower approximately nine metres high, dated to approximately 8000 BCE.

The ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and pre-Columbian Mesoamerica each developed distinctive architectural traditions suited to their climates, materials, and cultural requirements. Egyptian architecture is characterized by its massive stone construction, symmetrical planning, and hieroglyphic surface decoration, with the pyramid form — most familiar in the complexes at Giza — representing the highest expression of early monumental building.

Classical Architecture

Greek architecture, developed between approximately 600 and 300 BCE, established the formal vocabulary of the Western classical tradition: the three orders (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian), the temple type with its colonnaded portico, triangular pediment, and precisely proportioned entablature. The Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis (447–432 BCE), designed by Ictinus and Callicrates under the direction of the sculptor Phidias, is the most studied example of the Doric order and the most analyzed building in architectural history.

Roman architecture built on Greek precedent while developing new structural capabilities: the arch, the vault, and the dome. The Pantheon in Rome (completed approximately 125 CE under the Emperor Hadrian) remains the best-preserved Roman temple and the oldest domed building with an interior span — 43.3 metres — that would not be exceeded for more than thirteen centuries. Roman building technology enabled infrastructure at continental scale: aqueducts, roads, bridges, and urban sewage systems that supported a population of approximately one million in the city of Rome at its peak.

Asian, Islamic, and Medieval European Architecture

Parallel to the classical tradition, distinctive architectural cultures developed independently across Asia. Indian temple architecture, characterized by elaborate carved stone towers (shikharas) rising above inner sanctuaries, reached its highest expression in the temples of Khajuraho (tenth–eleventh century CE) and the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram. Chinese architecture is characterized by its timber-frame construction, upward-curving tiled roofs, and modular planning; the Forbidden City in Beijing (constructed 1406–1420) is the largest surviving example of traditional Chinese palace architecture. Japanese architecture developed the refinements of the timber tradition — the tea house, the Shinto shrine, the multi-story pagoda — to a level of material and spatial precision that profoundly influenced twentieth-century Modernist architects.

Islamic architecture, emerging in the seventh century CE, produced the mosque, the madrasa, and the palace complex — building types characterized by geometric surface decoration, the muqarnas (stalactite) vault, the pointed arch, and the integration of water features and landscaped gardens. The Alhambra in Granada (thirteenth–fourteenth century CE), the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul (1550–1557), and the Taj Mahal in Agra (1632–1653) represent peaks of the Islamic architectural tradition across three geographic and cultural contexts.

Medieval European architecture progressed from the Romanesque style — characterized by thick masonry walls, round arches, and solid construction — to the Gothic style, which from the twelfth century onwards deployed the pointed arch, the ribbed vault, and the flying buttress to allow unprecedented height and the dissolution of solid wall into stained glass windows. The great Gothic cathedrals — Chartres, Reims, Amiens, Notre-Dame de Paris, Cologne, Canterbury — remain among the most technically accomplished and spatially complex buildings in the Western tradition.

Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical Architecture

The Italian Renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries reoriented European architecture toward the classical models of Greece and Rome. Filippo Brunelleschi's dome for the Florence Cathedral (completed 1436) demonstrated that the technology of the ancient world could be recovered and applied; Leon Battista Alberti produced the first systematic Renaissance treatise on architecture; Michelangelo's work on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome established the vocabulary of the Roman High Renaissance.

The Baroque architecture of the seventeenth century extended Renaissance forms toward dramatic spatial sequences, curvilinear surfaces, and theatrical effects of light and shadow. The Rococo of the early eighteenth century pushed Baroque elaboration further, toward asymmetrical surface decoration and pastel interior colour. The Neoclassical movement of the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries reacted against Baroque and Rococo excess, returning to a more austere interpretation of Greek and Roman models influenced by archaeological discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Beaux-Arts style — academic Neoclassicism transmitted through the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris — produced the civic architecture of North American cities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Modernism and the International Style

The Modernist movement in architecture, emerging in the early twentieth century, rejected historical ornament and the revivalist tradition in favour of functional planning, structural honesty, and new industrial materials — steel, reinforced concrete, and plate glass. The Bauhaus, founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, synthesized architecture, craft, and fine art in a pedagogical program that trained a generation of designers who would spread Modernist principles internationally. Key figures of the Modernist movement include Frank Lloyd Wright, whose organic architecture sought to integrate buildings with their natural sites; Mies van der Rohe, whose steel-and-glass curtain-wall buildings defined the corporate office tower type; and Le Corbusier, whose urban visions and villa designs shaped the theoretical imagination of twentieth-century architecture.

The International Style, identified by Philip Johnson and Henry-Russell Hitchcock in their 1932 catalogue for the Museum of Modern Art exhibition of the same name, summarized the principles of European Modernism: volume rather than mass, regularity rather than symmetry, the elimination of applied ornament. The International Style became the dominant vocabulary for commercial and institutional construction globally from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Postmodernism and Contemporary Architecture

Postmodern architecture emerged as a reaction against the austerity and universalism of the International Style, reintroducing historical reference, ornament, and contextual responsiveness — often in ironic or collaged forms. Robert Venturi's Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966) provided the theoretical foundation; Michael Graves, Charles Moore, and Philip Johnson himself produced buildings that mixed classical quotation with contemporary construction. The deconstructivist movement of the 1980s and 1990s — associated with Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Daniel Libeskind — pursued formal fragmentation and spatial destabilization.

Contemporary architecture operates without a dominant style. The major themes of current practice include sustainability and environmental performance (LEED certification, passive design, net-zero energy targets), the use of computational design tools that enable complex geometries, the global reach of major architecture firms, and the growing integration of buildings with digital infrastructure. Architecture is practised today as a global discipline in which the designers of major buildings in any city may be headquartered in any country.

Architecture encompasses a range of building types distinguished by their program and social function: residential (single-family, multi-family, high-rise), commercial (office, retail, hotel), industrial (manufacturing, logistics), institutional (civic, educational, religious, cultural), landscape (parks, gardens, public realm), interior (the design of enclosed spaces within buildings), urban design (the orchestration of buildings, streets, and open space at the district scale), and naval architecture (the design of ships and marine structures).
