Torrance, a mixed industrial-residential suburb in southwestern Los Angeles County, ranks
112th among the 400 North American Regional Markets with a composite score of 6.0. The city
combines a large regional mall with a manufacturing and aerospace employment base uncommon
among the index's single-cluster markets.

## Overview

According to Wikipedia (accessed 2026-07-10), Torrance recorded a population of 147,067 at
the 2020 census (an estimated 139,576 by 2024) across 20.516 square miles of land,
approximately 20 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Leading employers include Torrance
Memorial Health System (4,070 employees), the local school district (2,675), and Providence
Little Company of Mary Medical Center (2,429); American Honda Motor Company maintains
significant operations with 1,496 employees, alongside Robinson Helicopter Company and
Honeywell Aerospace. The city hosts one of the ten largest malls in the United States, the
2.5-million-square-foot Del Amo Fashion Center, and oil refining remains economically
important through a PBF Energy facility. Torrance has the second-largest concentration of
people of Japanese ancestry of any U.S. city after Honolulu, alongside a significant Korean
American population; the 2020 census recorded the population as 35.30 percent white, 35.26
percent Asian, and 19.09 percent Hispanic or Latino.
