Split is the second-largest city in Croatia, on the Adriatic coast in Dalmatia. It combines a
Regional-tier cluster — Interspar and Kaufland paired with Bauhaus, Decathlon, and Hervis — and a
Local-tier cluster — Kaufland paired with Pevex. Ancona, Italy, sits 256.0 kilometres away by
straight-line distance, crossing the Adriatic Sea rather than reflecting a land commuting
relationship. The market carries European Regional Market classification under the co-location
screening framework's composition gate.

## Overview

Split recorded 160,577 residents at the 2021 census. <!-- wikipedia-sourced:
population/description --> The city grew up around the remains of Diocletian's Palace, built in
305 CE, on the site of the earlier Greek colony of Aspálathos — a continuous urban tradition
spanning more than seventeen centuries. Split has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and
draws more than a million visitors a year to its preserved ancient palace complex and Mediterranean
coastal setting.

## Anchor Composition

The Regional-tier cluster spans 2.7 kilometres and combines Interspar and Kaufland (hypermarket,
comparable to Walmart or Kroger) with Bauhaus (hardware, comparable to Home Depot or Lowe's) and
Decathlon and Hervis (sport). The Local-tier cluster, under three kilometres away, pairs Kaufland
with Pevex.

Both clusters draw on the same substantial civic weight: Split University Hospital Centre and the
Institute of Maritime Medicine anchor the medical presence, alongside the University of Split,
whose faculties in the cluster span medicine, dentistry, architecture, and maritime studies.

## Regional Market Standing

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Metropolitan reference point | Ancona, Italy |
| Distance (straight-line) | 256.0 km |
| Co-location clusters | 1 Regional-tier, 1 Local-tier |
| Catchment population | Not yet computed for this cluster |

The distance above is a straight-line (crow-flies) measurement to the nearest major metropolitan
reference point, not a drive-time or commuting estimate. Split has no land connection to Ancona, so
this figure measures the framework's nearest continental reference point across the Adriatic, not
a real commuting relationship. Catchment population has not yet been computed for Split's clusters
in the current dataset build; Croatia is one of six European countries without this figure in the
2026-08-07 release, alongside Bulgaria, Finland, Norway, Romania, and Sweden. See
[[atlas-top-400-europe|Top 400 Regional Markets — Europe]] for the full Top 400 set and
[[co-location-methodology|Co-location Methodology]] for how markets qualify.

## AEC Data

Cluster-level climate, seismic, and wildfire-hazard data has not yet been computed for either of
Split's clusters in the current GIS dataset build. This section will populate once that coverage
extends here; see [[gis-data-overview|GIS Data Overview]] for the AEC data pipeline.
